Is society a contract or a conflict? A sociological perspective on contract theory
The social contract theory is a philosophical idea that explains the origin of the state and political authority. It is based on the agreement of individuals to give up part of their freedom in exchange for protection of their rights and the organization of social life. This theory was developed by philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who differed in their views, but all agreed that political authority is legitimate only if it is based on the consent of the people and serves the common good
