Paronomasia in Kurdish Poetry
Paronomasia is clearly present in Kurdish poetry, where poets skillfully play on similar sounds to create layered meanings and emotional depth. In many Kurdish poems, words that sound alike but carry different meanings are placed close together to highlight contrasts such as love and loss, homeland and exile, or hope and pain.
For example, a poet may use two near-identical words—one referring to seeing and another to burning—to suggest that witnessing suffering is itself a form of inner fire. This sound-based wordplay is not merely decorative; it strengthens the musical quality of the verse and allows a single line to communicate multiple ideas at once.
