Human Security vs. Traditional Security: A Theoretical and Applied Approach with a Focus on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region
Human Security and Traditional Security: A Theoretical and Applied Approach with a Focus on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region The concept of security is one of the most prominent and central concepts in international relations and peace studies. This concept has undergone radical transformations over the past decades, shifting from a focus on protecting the state and its borders (traditional security) to one that prioritizes the individual and their basic needs (human security). In the Iraqi and Kurdish contexts, the contrast between these two concepts is clearly evident, as security policies still tend to emphasize the military and political dimensions while neglecting the human and social aspects. This seminar aims to review both concepts in their theoretical and applied dimensions, while offering a critical analysis of the realities in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
